I didn't want to just take the first 10 rolls and use them for ME icons, and the next 10 for DA, or go down the path of least resistance and use each roll for the fandom it fits more, so I went with the theme of the challenge and used a d20 die to assign the rolls to fandoms.

I ended up with no texture themes, which is sad, and with what feels like ALL the song themes, which is even sadder, because none of the songs actually fit my chosen subjects. Or they did fit, but I hated the song, and therefore refused to use it. And I wanted to icon 20 different characters, 10 faves from each fandom, so I had to engage in some inspiration gymnastics to make it all work... But somehow it all turned out well in the end, I think ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My goal here was to experiment a bit, don't just go cut out/solid bg/subtle texture on top for every icon, and while they're not as creative as they could be, I think I didn't fail.... completely. I even tried that gradient map coloring that's popular these days, and it was surprisingly fun :U (next goal: try it on real people) (next next goal: try a crop that's not center)

ahaha, omg, you're the only one this far who has used my icon for inspiration so thanks, I'm flattered :3 and I see that you used it for 'that gradient map coloring', so... welcome to the dark side I guess?? :DD IT IS FUN and i really love that icon, the reb+blue+white combo is great and it has the perfect matte look and sharpness and everything so yeah, totally rocking that style :>

secondly, I love that tyou went for some inspiration gymnastics, and that seems to have produced some really cool creative icons! The text use in 4 is awesome, love the placement and fonts. 13 is my fave probably just W O W loving the bright cyan animated tears and that that was your interpretation of a 'breakdown' :D 8 is super amazing too, looove the dark vibrancy and the painted details! 10 is perfect like your far crop + negative space icons always are - love the fun text use here, I can never make circular text work so i am in awe of this. 11 and 16 both have incredible rich colorings, and I love 18 cause the character stands out so nicely against the background.

This style is way more fun than I expected, so thank you for making that icon & making it so inspiring I guess c: IT IS DEFINITELY A DARK SIDE THOUGH. I just wanted to use it once to see how it works, but then I made two more for this set, and another two for other comms...... it's so fun to play with for really cool results, I want to use it all the time now. It's horrible.

btw, because of your 10in30 set from lat month, I started watching Free! and it's SO AWESOME & also RIDICULOUS, I keep giggling like an idiot. I'm only on ep3 of the first season, but I can already feel this anime is going to be a PROBLEM.

I finished season 1 today and I love it a lot, SO GOOD JOB @ YOUR ICONS? XD
I gotta say, I was expecting Rin & Haru to be gay for each other because of the icons, but I wasn't expecting them to be THIS GAY, in so little screentime. They had what, 10 minutes together in the entire season? 15 maybe? And yet, SO GAY. Now I'll have to speed-watch season 2, because I want to read fics and djs.... this it the worst..........

true, so little shared screentime but actually a lot if you add the time they're thinking of/obsessing over/longing for each other. :3

s2 has maybe 20% of the rinharuness of s1 though. There is one super rinharu ep but the rest, not so much. idk if this refocus of the plot was always in kyoani's plans or if it was adjusted to pander to the bigger and louder shipper base (yes i'm looking at you makoharus), but in any case, it's quite different from s1. but still definitely worth watching! I really hope you'll like it :>

....makoharu??? Seriously??? But it's the boring best friends ship. The dullest of the dull. HOW IS IT MORE POPULAR THAN ANGSTY RIVALS. D: D: I didn't even consider it a possibility in s1... I am shocked and confused.
Well, it doesn't matter. I'm still definitely going to watch s2, and I'll just have to focus extra hard on seeing rinharu subtext even when there's none :c

ikr. beats me. I think it has something to do with the fact that Makoto in general is the most popular of the characters, and Haru is the most logical ship for him I guess. A lot of them really hate Rin too, except the ones who ship Rin with Sousuke, but both types are quick to complain when rinharu gets any acknowledgment like official art or merch, which is why most of it focuses on the 'fan-approved' pairs: makoharu, sourin, reigisa and nitori/momo.

well, there's still some subtext alright, and the end of the season is pretty damn rewarding ;) but getting there can be frustrating after the goldmine that was s1.

...this fandom continues to baffle me. Makoto is the most popular?? But. BUT. But he's the supportive best friend. Idk if that's just me & my eternal hate for 'gentle best friend' type characters, but sometimes I thought they might as well replace him with a 'you can do it guys!!' sign in s1, and it wouldn't make a big difference, except maybe with the actual swimming bits. And characters like Rin are usually the most popular in like every other fandom I know? Is Free! fandom located in an alternate dimension where everything is the opposite or something D:

Yeah, I am just as baffled as you! I swear these were almost my exact reactions when I first learned about the straaange state of things in the Free!dom. I don't have anything against Mako personally but you gotta admit both Rin and Haru are more complex and interesting characters... even Rei has more depth than Mako, imo. Yet somehow he is the fandom darling :s

I don't HATE Mako, I guess... tbh, I don't even notice him most of the time, what does he even do?? So far (I'm on s2 e7) he hasn't had any crises, no big problems, no secrets... nothing. He signed up for a race against Haru once (and lost, so that was a waste of dramatic tension), and revealed he was afraid of the ocean, and that's it? WHAT IS THERE TO LOVE. Though lately I've noticed that some fandoms latch on to the most inoffensively boring characters because everyone else is ~problematic~, so it could be that? Maybe? I honestly cannot understand this. Even his design is so basic :s

The race against Haru is probably my favorite thing about Makoto tho, I love that he did it because he was jealous of Rin :p but other than that, there's not much to him. If I remember right, the next ep you're watching is actually his episode, but even that doesn't add that much to his character.

I think you might be onto something tbh. Mako's only 'flaws' are that he gets scared easily and babies others. So not really anything 'problematic' at all, unlike Rin who definitely gets his share of 'abusive!!' accusations from some of the fans >:/ but I still refuse to accept that someone would just outright decide who their fave is... for me it just happens automatically and if it happens to be some super problematic character, whoops, too bad ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ which, btw, Rin really isn't... like, not even close. but in the fandom that debate is still unresolved and has been on since 2013.

I watched Mako's ep just now, and yep, I have to agree it was more of the same with him, except this time he got to do it with actual kids... And I rolled my eyes SO HARD at the scenes with the dude from Mako & Haru's past, and blatant attempts at establishing Makoharu as shippy by showing that he Haru jealous. No more of this please :| (though with the direction the show seems to be going... it looks like there will be much more of this)

I try really hard to avoid the parts of fandom that scream 'problematic!!!!' at everything, but I think that's how it works for them, actually? They're drawn to a 'problematic' character, but they're hypocritical enough to declare that a flawless snoozefest is their actual fave and live in self-denial about their actual preferences. I've always preferred the evil douchebags and love-hate/rival ships and I'm not ashamed to admit it XD
Earlier today I saw a tumblr post on how Nagisa is a creepy stalker because he didn't back off after Rei said he didn't wait to join the club the first time, so I have absolutely no trouble believing they've decided Rin was abusive too...

Oh yes, that's exactly how the makoharu fans took the Kisumi scenes. And I agree that they pandered to them. However, while I haven't read the novels about their past myself, I hear that in them Kisumi intentionally annoys and bothers Haru all the time (idk why, probably just for the lulz?) so in canon, Haru has a perfectly good non-Mako-related reason not to want to interact with him again. But of course we weren't shown that and the scenes really did give a jealousy vibe :s

I mostly got a 'annoyed by this weird due' vibe from Haru, but of course they had to show Haru's annoyed face when Kisumi was hugging/touching Mako, just to make it more shippy.... BUT I FORGIVE THEM. Because of the Australian Honeymoon episode. With bed sharing! And Rin talking so much about Haru's eyes that the couple who hosted him remembered it word for word after years! SO SUCK IT MAKO :D (or well, not suck anything at all lol)

YES AWESOME YOU GOT TO THE HONEYMOON EPISODE. s2 was a long wait to get to the good stuff but it was so worth it! allll the shippy tropes from only one bed to meeting the parents (kinda) and that awkward reaction when Rin was asked about a girlfriend. And a million shippy quotes, and the fact unlike certain others, Rin was able to help Haru find his dream :3 How someone can watch that ep (and s1 finale) (and all of s1 actually.....) and insist that makoharu is 'basically canon', I really have no clue x)

i read all your guys comments and from someone who ships both rinharu and makoharu (bt also haru x sousuke bc i ship everyone with haru lol), i have to say that the fandom is the number 1 thing you should stay away from, just like every other fandom. lol. i mean every fandom has it's fair share of crazies, but these people are batshit D: i still can't believe how much hate rin got and haru too :c and now that there's free ~starting days, it's gonna start ll over again lol :v

i personally don't find makoharu boring bc im a sucker for the friend turns to love trope x3 and from an aesthetically pleasing pov, rin is way more attractive to me *-* BUT. i love makoto's seiyuu so much ♥

Omg nooo you probably shouldn't read our ship rants since you're on the sanest side, as a multishipper. I so wish I could be too but in fandoms where shipping actually affects things and causes drama with the creators (like with the feel our hearts vs makoto's brithday box campaign fiasco wtfery), it's super difficult to not get annoyed by the 'opposite side' :S

I do love the friends to lovers trope sometimes, I actually started loving Swan Queen more when they became (awkwardish) friends instead of enemies. And if rinharu got together on s2 and not directly on s1, I'd still love it and that would be friends to lovers. But friendships that have lasted very long and gotten to that comfortable, always understanding each other, perfect trust, always supportive stage, it just starts feeling a bit too lukewarm for me to see any romantic tension there, kind of like if a couple would skip the romantic euphoria honeymoon stage and go right into the old married couple stage, which is just super boring to me :p ....but there are some exceptions to this too, I quite loved Kirk/Spock from the original star trek for a while and it's all of those things. Idk, shipping is complex! Anyway, I'm glad we have our own little Free! club here, now who do we recruit next? :3
