therefore, an uninspired post. but I had fun making it :v
extra hard mode looked interesting, but hunting down original caps would have been a major pain - for some of those icons I had to take caps myself (and I don't have them anymore), and I don't like mixing fandoms anyway so.... hard mode it is.

Just to name a few favorites:
1 is just perfect, the sparkle animation adds just enough to the minimalistic icon to make it super fun and eyecatching!
Uh, HOW IS 2 A REAL PHOTO in the bg though, it looks exactly like an anime background?? Holy shit you're good at image manipualtion, wow. And of course the shading is A M A Z I N G
5 is super fun with the extreme negative space, the light rays and the triangle texture are great additions and so is the shadow!
Wooow the depth in 7 is to die for, the coloring and lighting are just flawless, and also wow at 9, I mean I have to love it cause it's pink and purple and vibrant but also DARK VIBRANCY, YESSS.
Love all of the third row especially, my top favorites being 12 (perfect geometric bg and THE TEXT!) and 13 (the animation is great, I don't know how people even make these longer animations, I can only use like... 7 frames max :D, and also the lime green bg looks gorgeous with the simple outlines of cityscape!)
16 is SUPER COOL and kinda creepy, the red/black combo is always great, fantastic choice of background texture as well. And 18 is super pretty too, love the atmospheric space texturing.
Thanks so much for entering!!

Hands down one of the best things I've seen on TV this year!
This set is amazing, You say you're uninspired but all I'm seeing is pure awesome :D
The animations on 1 and 13 are super cute and made me smile. I love the lighting on 2, 4 and 7. The texture use on 5, 8 and 12 is super gorgeous. I love the deep blues and purples across this set. They're not only visually attractive but the icons themselves are gifts that keep giving. Like 7 for example, the longer I look at it the more I love it <3
My favourites are probably 11 and 14 though. Crop, lighting, colouring...they've got it all. Pure perfection IMO!

Honestly this challenge was interesting af, on the one hand the themes are based on my own icons I was guaranteed to only get things I am familiar with, but at the same time, combining them and thinking of a way to do it differently since I didn't want to just copy the old icons.... really cool. So thank you for thinking of it!
(I'm kind of curious how you did the pairs? I would assume it was automated in some way, but my smooth brain cannot come up with a way to do it for multi-maker comms or differentiate icon posts vs praise posts or stuff like that)

I would have liked the algorithm to be more automated but that would have required some sort of web scraping and still would have been unreliable because of the things you mentioned among other things, so it was mostly manual. This is how I prepared for it: I used the calendar view of the journal to first count the posts per each month, resulting in a number to post mapping => an easy way to randomize a post from the comm with the help of an Excel file. Then I randomized a number (post) and if the post was a valid icon post (and not a tutorial, promo, praise post etc), I'd randomize and icon from it; if not, I'd mark this number as invalid so that it's quick to skip in the following randomizing rounds. Repeat 40x. Obviously this took a lot of time but I saved some by starting to randomize all the post numbers first so that I could take a look at one post at a time in order, instead of going back and forth everywhere. It was still slow, so I did as much preparing as I could beforehand (creating these helper excel files for most active previous participants in advance).
